Box Score ASHLAND, Wisconsin (SabreAthletics.com) -- The Marian University men's hockey team settled for a 2-2 tie after host Northland College found the equalizer with just 43 seconds left in regulation of an NCHA series finale this afternoon.
The Sabres (7-11-1, 3-8-1 NCHA) totaled 40 shots and a pair of power play goals to take a 2-1 lead into the third period, but the LumberJacks (2-14-3, 2-9-1 NCHA) capitalized on an extra-man situation after pulling their goalie and tied it with just 43 seconds remaining. Both teams went scoreless in the overtime session.
"We were disappointed to let in that late goal to tie the game, but on a positive note, we scored two power play goals," Head Coach AJ Aitken said.
Northland's Petter Bulling was the hero, recording both of his teams' goals on the day. He got the 'Jacks on the board at the 8:00 mark of the first period to put the hosts in front and tied the game late in the third period.
For the Sabres, Derek Perl got on the sheet for the first time this season with a power play goal at the 11:25 mark of the first period. Scott Milnthorp was credited with the assist and Marian and Northland entered the first intermission tied at 1-1.
Mark Whiteley added Marian's second power play tally at the 5:07 mark of the second period with assists credited to Brian Berger and Hunter Stewart.
Marian entered the third period with a 2-1 advantage and nearly sealed the deal until Bulling tied it in the final minute.
"We had several chances to put the game away, but our lack in scoring has become an issue," Aitken said.
Sophomore Mike Baldwin made 21 saves in the game, while his counterpart Jesse Dilillo made 38 saves.
Marian will be back in action next Friday night, Jan. 30, when it plays host to Concordia Wisconsin inside the Blue Line Family Ice Center. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
