Sabres tie No. 2 UWSP to open non-conference road trip

Box Score

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The Marian University men's hockey team (2-3-2, 2-3-1 NCHA) took a 3-2 lead into the third period against No. 2 UW-Stevens Point (6-0-1, 0-0-0 WIAC) but a late surge from the Pointers forced overtime and ultimately a 3-3 overtime tie.

UWSP opened the scoring but it was Scott Milnthorp in the final minute of the opening period, seconds after a power play finished, from the point that knotted the game at 1-1.  The goal was Milnthorp's second of the season and capped off an opening frame where the Sabres held an 8-7 shots advantage.

Marian then built on their lead with a pair of goals to start the second period.  Hunter Stewart was able to tip a puck in front of the net off a Gianni Mangone shot at the 10:06 mark for his third goal on the year.  Then a little over two minutes later it was Mangone on the power play who sent a one-timer past the UWSP goalie from the right circle to extend the lead to 3-1 with 7:34 left to play in the period for his third score of the season.

The Pointers then built some momentum to end the period scoring 39 seconds after the Mangone goal and finishing the period with a 12-11 shots advantage.

The third period proved to be all UWSP as they outshot the Sabres 12-4 in the period, but Mike Baldwin stood on his head.  The Pointers were still able to tie the game at three apiece with under five minutes to play in the third in an odd-man rush, however.  The UWSP equalizer eventually sent the squads to overtime where Marian bounced back and outshot the Pointers 5-3, but neither team could light the lamp.

Baldwin finished the game with 31 saves in the game with 22 of them coming between the second and third periods.

Derek Perl, Derek Thorogood, and Mangone each sent four shots on goal to lead the Sabres.

Marian finishes off the first road trip of the season at UW-Superior tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 21, with a 7 p.m. puck drop.
