Box Score DULUTH, Minn. - The Marian University men's hockey team (5-4-3, 3-4-1 NCHA) held a 1-0 third period lead, but St. Scholastica was able to force overtime and net a game winner just 16 seconds into the extra period as the Sabres fell 2-1 to finish out the first half of the season.
The Sabres were only able to send four shots on net in the opening period of the game, but Jake Howie made the most of one of those shots with his sixth goal of the season at the 11:11 mark to put MU up 1-0. Derek Thorogood and Curtis Lewington assisted the goal for their 10th, and third point on the season, respectively.
The second period was quiet with each team being turned away on a pair of power plays before the Saints capitalized on their fifth man-advantage opportunity of the game to even the score at 1-1 with only 9:03 left in regulation.
The Saints held a 37-16 shots advantage at the end of regulation, and only needed one shot to end the game with an overtime goal 16 seconds into the extra stanza.
Mike Baldwin once again played strong in the crease for the Sabres making a total of 38 saves with 28 of his stops coming in the first and second period.
Tanner Pagendam and Howie each had three shots on net to lead MU.
Marian opens the second half of the season on the road traveling to UW-River Falls for a 7 p.m. non-conference game.
