Box Score 2 FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) -- It was an overtime thriller at the Blue Line Family Ice Center, tonight, February 13, as the Marian University men's hockey team came from behind to upset the St. Scholastica Saints. With time running out in overtime, Brian Berger fooled St. Scholastica's goalie, Tyler Bruggerman, to finish off the Saints 6-to-5.
The Sabres (12-11-1, 8-7-2) were quick to get on the board as Carson Johnstone scored his second goal of the season to put the Sabres up by one just over two minutes in. Defensively, the Sabres held the Saints (11-10-3, 8-7-2 NCHA) to nine shots in the first period, while Mike Gudmandson stayed strong in net.
St. Scholastica's offense became fast and overpowering in the second period and they were able to have their way with the Sabre defense. Freshman standout, Luke Simpson, was able to tie up the game just over a minute in with his 11th goal of the season.
RJay Berra put the Sabres back on top 40 seconds later when he connected with Brodie Jamieson and Warrant Carter, but the lead didn't last long as the Saints started to take control of the period.
Three unanswered goals by the Saints, including two by senior, Derek Hills, turned the tides as they gained a 4-2 lead going into the final period.
Mike Baldwin took over in net for the Sabres and quieted the Saint's attack in the final period, while making 15 saves. Marian was able to fight their way back, starting with a power play goal by freshman, Hunter Stewart. Four minutes later Stewart was at it again, this time earning the assist as he found Ben Morgan to even the score at four.
It looked as if the Sabres had gained enough momentum to run away with the game but the Saints had other plans. A hooking call on RJay Berra put the Saints on the power play with under five minutes remaining. The Saints were able to capitalize just over a minute into the power play when Matt Malenstyn scored his fourth goal of the season to give them the lead.
It was desperation mode for the Sabres with just under a minute left when they pulled Baldwin from the game. The Sabres were having little luck on the 6-on-5, but a checking call with slightly over a minute remaining gave the Sabres one last shot. With the 6-on-4 advantage, Mark Whitely was able to score in the final minute to save the Sabres's night.
The Sabres and Saints meet again tomorrow for their final game of the regular season as the Sabres celebrate their Senior Day. Action starts at 4:30.
