Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's hockey team welcomed the Finlandia Lions to the Blue Line Family Ice Center for an NCHA match-up, tonight, February 7. Three Unanswered goals by Sabres helped lead them to a 4-2 victory over the Lions for their third win in-a-row.
The Sabres (10-11-1, 6-8-1 NCHA) controlled the puck for most of the game, outshooting the Lions 38-11 on the night. In the final two periods the Sabres were able to get off 22 shots as they increased their attack to come from behind.
Warren Carter continued to be an offensive force for the Sabres and was able to put the team on top just over a minute into play with his eighth goal of the season.
The Lions (4-17-1, 3-12-0 NCHA) were able to respond and gain momentum later in the first period with two goals of their own, despite only getting off four shots in the period. Brandon Passley evened the score at one when he scored just under nine minutes in. James Devlin gave put the Lions on top by one with just under two minutes remaining in the period.
Momentum shifted back Sabres way just over two minutes into the second when Derek Thorogood found Tanner Pagendam for his second goal of the season to even the game at two. Brian Berger was able to put the Sabres on top with less than five minutes remaining in the period, finishing off a pass from Scott Milnthorp.
The Sabre defense tightened up in the final two periods and limited opportunities for the Lions. Derek Perl was able to take advantage, delivering the final blow to the Lions just over five minutes into the third when he was able to score on a line drive shot from about 20 yards out.
Mike Gudmandson had another solid night for the Sabres guarding the net, making nine saves on the night. The win was Gudmandson's sixth of the season as he leads the Sabres.
With the win the Sabres clinch a postseason berth while they remain in sixth place in the NCHA behind MSOE. The Sabres and Lions will meet again tomorrow for their final game of the season series. The puck is set to drop at 3 pm.
