Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's hockey team won their fourth straight today, as they played host to the Finlandia Lions in an NCHA meeting. The Sabres came out with an explosive offensive performance to finish their series sweep over the Lions.
The Sabres (11-11-1, 7-8-1 NCHA) picked up where they left off yesterday, having little problem breaking through the Lion's (4-18-1, 3-13-0) defense. Jacob Ryd was successful at finding opportunities for the Sabres in the first period as he twice set up Sabre goals. Derek Thorogood put the Sabres on top 5 minutes in with the finish, while Brian Berger made it 2-0 on a power play opportunity with less than three minutes remaining in the period.
Finlandia's offense started to pick up in the second half. Freshman standout, Thomas Malkmus, was able to get the Lions offense on the board with less than five minutes into the period to put them within a goal of the Sabres.
The explosive offense of the Sabres helped propell the Sabres past the Lions. Three goals in under eight minutes provided the Sabres extra comfort as they quickly increased their lead to four. Aaron Leonard scored his first goal of the game, while Thorogood and Berger picked up their second.
Andrew Huckleby was able to score Finlandia's second goal with under three minutes left in the period, but the Lions still found themselves in a three-goal hole.
Marian's, Warren Carter, provided some insurance for the Sabres with less than 10 minutes left in the game as he finished off a pass from RJay Berra. A quick response by Finlandia's Justin Scott once again put the Lions down by three, but they were unable to get any closer.
Mike Gudmandson has covered net for the Sabres during their four-game streak, and now has a record of 7-7 on the year. Finlandia's Andrew Brownlee got the start while earning the loss for the Lions as he allowed five goals.
The Sabres return to action on Friday, Feb. 13, at the Blue Line Family Ice center for their first of two games against the St. Scholastica Saints. The puck is set to drop at 7 pm.
