TUCSON, Ariz. – Despite a late rally the Marian baseball team dropped an 8-5 decision Wednesday evening to Macalester College at the Tucson Invitational Games. Due to rain the contest was called in the eighth inning.
The Sabres drew first blood.
To start the bottom half of the first Cole Miklavcic tripled to right field to put the leadoff hitter in scoring position. The next batter, Tyler Thompson singled up the middle to score the run.
However, MC responded in the top of the second. Collin Branter connected on a 3-run home run to right field and the Scots led 3-1.
MC (6-0) added three more runs in the top of the fourth and led 7-1.
Marian (2-6) responded with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning.
Thompson added his second RBI of the game and Jordan DeBoer flied out to right field to score Tommy Dugandzic who tagged from third.
Miklavcic later trotted home on an error by the first baseman.
Dugabdzic had a standout performance. The 5-foot-5, 155-pound sophomore batted 4-for-4 and drew a walk.
Tanner Biwer absorbed the loss. The righty tossed four innings and allowed eight hits, seven runs and one walk. He also struck out two batters.
The Sabres conclude their play in the Tucson Invitational Thursday, March 19 against St. Johns. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. (CT).
