FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Marian baseball showcased its powerful offense and earned a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference sweep over rival Lakeland College 22-4 and 20-2 Sunday afternoon at Herr-Baker Field.
In the series opener the Muskies (6-22, 2-10 NACC) opened up an early 4-0 advantage behind a pair of home runs. In the top of the second inning Jared Schaaf hit a two-run home run and in the top of the third Bryce Skelton hit a two-run home run for the Muskies.
After a scoreless fourth inning the Marian offense awoke in the bottom of the fifth.
With two runners in scoring position, leadoff hitter Cole Miklavcic doubled to center field to score two. Ty Gellinger followed that up with an RBI double to left field and cut the Muskies lead to one at 4-3. Tony Grannis tied it up with a double to right field and Adam Ryan pushed across the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Ryan Blise and Chase Eagan each added RBI singles and the Sabres lead 8-4 after five-complete innings.
There was no slowing down in the bottom of the sixth.
With two runners on, the left-handed TJ McCoy hit a three-run home run to left field to jumpstart a 14-run sixth inning.
Despite allowing two early home runs, Bryce Taylor (2-0) was effective. The 6-foot-4, 168-pound senior tossed a complete seven innings and allowed six hits, four runs and one walk and struck out eight.
McCoy batted 2-for-4 with five RBs and two runs scored. Jordan DeBoer and Grannis collected three hits apiece.
As a team the Sabres produced 22 hits and 21 RBIs and drew five walks.
In the nightcap Marian opened up an 8-0 lead and never looked back.
Eagan batted 4-for-4 with five RBIs and a home run and Ryan went 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs.
Tanner Biwer (2-2) earned the win. The Fish Creek, Wis. native threw five innings and allowed seven hits, two runs (none earned) and one walk and struck out one.
Marian (11-13, 7-3 NACC) winners of three in a row and five out of six return to action Wednesday evening against Ripon. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. at Herr-Baker Field.
