Sabres hold off late push to sweep Northland

FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's hockey (7-5-3, 5-4-1 NCHA) earned their first sweep of the season with a 4-2 victory over Northland.

After a scoreless opening period, Jake Howie opened the scoring with his seventh goal of the year from the slot after receiving a pass from the right circle from Ben MorganHunter Stewart also assisted the goal that came at the 5:06 mark and gave MU the first lead of the day.  Brodie Jamieson then built the Sabre lead beating the glove of the NC goaltender from the right circle with assists to Devin Stuermer and Mike Zajac.

MU continued to pressure the LumberJacks in the Northland zone to begin the third period and led to Tanner Pagendam burying a puck fed from Derek Thorogood for his fourth score of the season.  Jacob Ryd also assisted the goal which proved to be the game winner.

The LumberJacks made the game interesting in the second half of the third period with a pair of goals, but Jamieson was able to put the game away with an empty net goal just before the final horn for his second goal of the game.  Stuermer assisted the goal for his second assist of the game as well.

Marian finished the game with a 32-13 shots advantage including a 23-6 margin between the second and third period.

Mike Baldwin improved to 5-2-3 on the season with 11 saves in 59:18 of action, while Connor Busch competed in his first collegiate game for the Sabres in the win.

Marian next opens a home-and-home series against Concordia Wisconsin in a pivotal series with major implications on the NCHA standings.  The Sabres host the Falcons Friday, Jan. 15 at Blue Line before traveling to CUW for game two the following day with both games scheduled for a 7 p.m. puck drop.
