Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's hockey (4-6-1, 2-5-0 NCHA) started fast as the Sabres defeated St. Scholastica 4-3 in NCHA action.
Sophomore Jake Howie lit the lamp off a rebound for his second goal of the season to opening the scoring for the game. Seniors Brodie Jamieson and Derek Perl each assisted the goal and only 1:23 later the Sabres added to that lead on the power play.
Sophomore Nick Monfils was able to find the back of the net with assists to junior Braden Crone and senior Scott Milnthorp at the 6:57 mark of the opening period to extend the Sabre lead. Junior Curtis Lewington then lit the lamp on the power play for his second goal of the season, assists to sophomore Gianni Mangone and Perl, to cap off the scoring for the first period.
The Sabres held a 9-7 shots advantage for the period, but St. Scholastica would fight back in the second period outshooting MU 12-5 and using a pair of goals to cut the deficit to one at 3-2.
Jamieson provided extra cushion beating the blocker of the CSS goalie on the power play to put Marian up 4-2 at the 2:35 mark of the third period. The third power play goal of the game for Marian proved to be the game-winner with assists to Milnthorp and Howie.
The Saints would tally an unassisted goal on a line rush at the 13:10 mark but the Sabre defense stood tall the remainder of the game to close out the 4-3 win.
St. Scholastica would outshoot Marian 30-23 for the game, but the Sabre power play unit played well scoring three times on five opportunities.
Senior Mike Baldwin (3-4-1) took the win in net for the Sabres making 27 saves on the night.
Marian and St. Scholastica close out the series tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 3, with a 4 p.m. puck drop.
