Box Score HANCOCK, Mich. - No. 12/14 Marian University men's hockey (15-5-3, 13-4-1 NCHA) moved into a first place tie atop the NCHA South standings with a 5-0 win over Finlandia for the Sabres' 10th consecutive win, the longest current unbeaten streak in the nation.
The Sabres are also now guaranteed to host at least one playoff game for the first time since the 2004 MCHA Tournament where MU defeated Lawrence 5-1 before dropping the championship to Minnesota-Crookston 3-0.
The game began as a defensive battle with Marian taking six of the nine shots on goal in the period.
Brodie Jamieson then opened the scoring with a pair of goals in the second period. His first came at the 4:33 mark with assists to Devin Stuermer and Derek Thorogood, while his second came at the 13:49 mark on a Sabre power play with Stuermer and Warren Carter assisting the goal. The goals were number four and five on the year for Jamieson.
Another MU power play goal opened the second period with Scott Milnthorp lighting the lamp as he was assisted by Thorogood and Lewington for his fifth score of the year. Marian then scored a pair of goals separated by only 12 seconds starting with an unassisted tally from Lewington for his second goal on the year followed by Ben Morgan's second goal of the year, assists to Jake Howie and Milnthorp.
Marian finished the game with a 34-9 shots advantage with Mike Gudmandson earning his first career shutout to bump his record to 4-3-0 on the year. The Sabre power play was strong once again going 2-3 in the contest.
Marian will be off next weekend before opening a home-and-home series against Aurora on the road Friday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m.
