Box Score 2 SHEBOYGAN, Wis. - Marian University baseball (7-12, 0-4 NACC) is still in search for their first conference win after being swept on the road at Lakeland with final scores of 6-5 in 11 innings and 14-6.
The beginning of the game saw both offenses get off to fast starts leading to a Lakeland 3-2 lead after three innings. Brett Kramer and Schuyler Rath each had RBIs before the pitching staffs took over. Marian had an opportunity in the top of the fifth with the bases loaded and nobody out but a strikeout and double play would hold the Sabres scoreless in the frame.
The Muskies were able to extend on their lead in the bottom of the eighth before the Sabres used a two-out rally in the top of the ninth to force extras. Jake Falish started the rally with two outs in the ninth drawing a walk before Tony Grannis doubled down the right field line putting both them both in scoring position. Adam Ryan provided the clutch hit that brought both runners in with a single to right field.
It took until the 11th inning in extras when Grannis put the Sabres ahead for the first time in the game scoring Jordan Walker following a sacrifice bunt from Falish. Lakeland rallied in the bottom half of the frame, however, plating a pair of runs for the walk off win.
The top three Sabre hitters in the lineup went a combined 8-15 at the dish led by Grannis who was 3-5 with two runs scorded and a run batted in.
Austin Hansen (3-3) took the loss only allowing one earned run in 2.2 innings, while Jordan Bock went 4.1 innings in relief prior to Hansen scattering five hits and allowing one unearned run.
The Sabres scored early in the second half of the twin bill, but a pair of crooked numbers gave Lakeland the sweep. Cody Schaefer and Mitchel Buss each had RBI singles before Lakeland put up four runs in the bottom of the fourth with none of the runs earned.
A two-RBI double from Jordan Bill in the bottom of the sixth and a Lakeland fielding error to plate Grannis in the seventh tied the game at the moment at 5-5. The Muskies answered following the seventh inning stretch, however, with eight runs all coming with two outs in the inning. Marian would tack on a run in the top of the ninth but it wasn't enough as Lakeland was able to cruise to the sweep.
Falish completed his impressive doubleheader going 3-5 with two runs scored, and Tyler Thompson also had a multi-hit game going 3-4 with a run scored.
Brady Nehring provided a solid start but didn't factor in the decision only allowing one earned run in his 4.1 innings of work.
Marian returns home to host Benedictine Tuesday, April 12 for a 3 p.m. doublheader.
