Marian swept in final doubleheader day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TUCSON, Ariz. – Wednesday wasn't kind to the Marian University baseball team (3-5, 0-0 NACC) as they suffered a pair of tough losses.

In the opener, Salem State rallied for 4 runs in the bottom of the 9th to steal a 4-3 win.

The only run before 9th inning came in the 3rd when senior Tyler Thompson's groundout to second plated sophomore Jake Falish.

Marian added a pair of runs in the top of the 9th when Hunter Berry scored on a Travis Slywka single after right fielder Jose Cedano bobbled the ball. Later in the inning pinch runner Trey Johnson scored on a Falish sac fly to center.

Freshman Zach Sandoval shutdown Salem State in eight innings of work, giving up just 3 hits and striking out four before giving way to the bullpen in the 9th with the 3-0 lead.

Salem State's winning rally in the bottom of the 9th got going as Dan Conners was hit by Conner Nelson to lead-off the inning. Cedano singled, then Nick Day singled off of Nelson to score Conners to get the Vikings on the board. Two batters later the bases were cleared as pinch hitter Joe Kasper tied the game at three with a two run triple off of Sam Long. The game ended one batter later as Alex Toomey blasted a double to left center, scoring Kasper for the walk-off win.

Conner Nelson (0-1) took the loss while Tyler Fitzgerald (1-0) pitched 1.1 innings in relief of Will Twiss to earn the win.

Augsburg College took down the Sabres in the night-cap picking up a 14-4 victory.

After giving up a single run in the bottom of the 2nd, the Sabres battled back with three runs in the top of the 3rd. Senior Tommy Dugandzic slapped an RBI single to left that scored Thompson. Matt Nortland followed that up with a bases clearing double deep to left center that plated senior Cole Miklavcic and Dugandzic to make it 3-1 Marian.

The lead was short lived as Augsburg scored three runs in the bottom half of the frame to jump ahead 4-3. They added one more in the 4th, five runs in the 5th and four more in the 8th to end it.

Sophomore Ty Peccioli (0-2) went four innings and took the loss for the Sabres.

The Sabres will play their 9th game in Tucson on Thursday, March 16 against Dickinson State with first pitch set for noon (CDT).
