Sabres split with Muskies to open weekend

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University baseball (7-13, 2-4 NACC) defeated Lakeland in game one 11-10 in 11 innings before dropping the night cap 16-12.

Both offenses came out swinging as Lakeland opened the game with four runs in the first inning and added a run in the third.  Marian was also able to start the game hot with senior Cole Miklavcic and sophomore Hunter Berry driving in runs and senior Tyler Thompson hitting a home run to put Marian down 5-3 after three innings.

Marian then busted out for three runs in the fourth to take their first lead of the game.  Miklavcic was able to drive in freshman Trey Johnson before senior Tommy Dugandzic gave Marian their second home run of the game to put MU ahead 6-5.

The small lead didn't last long as the Muskies were able to hit a grand slam in the top of the sixth to retake the lead.  MU answered cutting into the deficit in the bottom half of the inning off a two RBI single from Thompson.

Lakeland answered once again, however, with a single run in the top of the seventh to extend their lead to 10-8.

Thompson once again came up clutch in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single to score freshman Nick Bastien before an RBI double from sophomore Travis Slywka tied the game at 10-10.

The opener of the day would require extras where Johnson was able to come around in the bottom of the 11th scoring off an error to give Marian the walkoff win.

Sophomore Jordan Bock (1-1) earned the win throwing the final 5.2 innings scattering four hits and only allowing one unearned run.

Thompson had the big bat for MU going 4-6 with four runs batted in and a run scored.  Johnson and Miklavcic each recorded three hits in the win.

For game two, the Muskies jumped ahead early once again scoring a pair of runs in the first inning.  Another RBI single from Thompson, however, put the game at 2-1 after one.

The Sabres then broke out for three runs in the third and fourth.  Miklavcic, Dugandzic and freshman Jake Arens each had RBI hits in the third, while Dugandzic and senior Michael Pappas brought in runs in the fourth to give MU the 7-2 advantage.

Lakeland would cut into that lead with a run in the sixth but the Marian bats had another big inning in the bottom half.  Pappas, Arens, Bastien and freshman Tommy Miller drove runs in as Marian totaled five runs for the inning to take a 12-3 lead.

Lakeland hung around, however, and managed to score seven runs in the eighth and six runs in the ninth to comeback and defeat Marian 16-12.

Sophomore Brady Nehring went 5.1 innings in the start scattering six hits and only allowing one earned run while striking out seven Muskies.

The top five Sabres in the lineup would go a combined 13-22 in the loss led by Thompson who finished 4-6 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI.

Marian closes out the weekend at Benedictine tomorrow, Sunday, April 9, for a noon doubleheader in NACC action.
