Box Score 2 LISLE, Ill. - Marian University baseball (8-14, 3-5 NACC) fell to Benedictine 8-2 in the opener before a late rally led the Sabres to a 4-2 win in the night cap of a NACC doubleheader.
Benedictine was able to jump on the Sabres early and MU couldn't recover as they dropped game one. The Eagles would score five runs in the first inning and plated one run in the second and fourth as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead.
The Sabres would get on the board in the top of the fifth with freshman Trey Johnson singling to score fellow freshman Jake Arens, which was followed by a single from senior Tyler Thompson that scored sophomore Jake Falish to put the score at 7-2.
The Marian bats were unable to string together hits the rest of the way, however, and an Eagle run in the sixth set the final at 8-2.
Johnson finished the game 3-4 with an RBI to lead the offense with senior Tommy Dugandzic also recording a multi-hit game going 2-4.
The duo of sophomores Connor Nelson and Ty Peccioli closed out the final 2.0 innings of the game only allowing one hit with three punch outs.
The Eagle offense went to work early once again to open game two taking a 2-0 lead after two innings. The Sabres were able to cut that lead in half courtesy of a Johnson double bringing in freshman Tommy Miller in the fifth before MU took their first lead of the day.
In the seventh inning, Falish would single in Arens before a passed ball allowed freshman Nick Bastien to score and put Marian ahead 3-2. Bastien then padded the lead in the eighth when he drove in senior Cole Miklavcic with a single to right center.
From there freshman Tim Dziergas (1-2) took over and shut down the Eagles earning his first career win. Dziergas would throw the final 3.1 innings only allowing one hit in relief of freshman Drew Nuanes who went 5.2 only allowing five hits and striking out just as many.
Miller would finish the game 2-3 with a run scored and a walk, while Miklavcic and Falish each went 2-4 in the win.
Marian travels to regional-rival Ripon Thursday, April 13 for a 4 p.m. first pitch in non-conference action.
