Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. - The Marian University men's soccer (1-0-0, 0-0-0 NACC) offense flexed their muscles with a 4-0 victory over Maranatha Baptist to open the season.
The Sabres needed only a little over 10 minutes to open the scoring on the season when senior Muhammed Abshir weaved through the middle of the box and sent a shot to the far post that found the back of the net to put MU ahead 1-0. A mere eight minutes later, fellow senior Alonso Fragoso sent a shot towards net that was blocked, but corralled the rebound and went far post to beat the Sabercat keeper and put Marian ahead 2-0.
Marian continued their offensive dominance the remainder of the half but settled for the 2-0 halftime score. The Sabres were able to keep their momentum to open the second half when Fragoso was able to get the ball in the box and force a penalty kick. Fragoso made the most of the opportunity going towards the right post for his second goal of the game.
Not to be outdone, Abshir would take a chip pass from freshman Stevie Tovar and did the rest going to the right post for his second goal of the game to conclude the scoring at 4-0.
The Marian back line was stingy and didn't allow any shots to reach junior Ian Chacon (1-0-0) who posted his fifth career shutout with the win.
The Sabres return to the pitch when they travel to Lawrence Sunday, Sept. 3 for a 1 p.m. kick off.
