Marian men's hockey bounces back against Northland

Box Score

FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's hockey (12-6-1, 7-6-0 NCHA) bounced back after a tough weekend defeating Northland 5-1 to open a three-game weekend.

Senior Gianni Mangone opened the scoring for the night at the 7:00 mark of the first period with assists to fellow senior Cole McCaig and junior James Mathias.  A pair of power play goals from each squad followed with the 'Jacks getting on the board at the 12:49 mark and Marian answering just 1:10 later.  The Sabre power play goal came just 11 seconds into the Northland penalty and was scored by junior Nick Monfils, his 3rd of the year, with an assist to senior Hunter Stewart.

Mangone then netted his second goal of the game, sixth of the season, 1:49 into the beginning of the second period.  With the goal, Mangone became the all-time leading goal scorer for defenseman in Marian program history.  Monfils assisted the goal for his second point of the night as Marian went ahead 3-1.

Senior Derek Thorogood was the next to light the lamp at the 12:53 mark of the second period for his 12th goal of the year, assist to fellow senior Curtis Lewington.  The score capped off a dominating period for the Sabres where MU outshot Northland 15-4.

After seeing history with Mangone, Marian then saw history on their final goal, an empty netter scored by sophomore Mitchell Baumann for his third goal of the season.  Baumann was assisted by sophomore Hunter Vorva who became the first Marian goaltender to earn a point since Culleen Caldwell in 2010 when Marian defeated CUW 5-4.

Vorva also got it done in net making 23 saves including all 12 shots he faced in the third period.  The Sabres finished with a 32-24 advantage in shots led by sophomore Conner Blanck who had five shots on goal.  In the faceoff circle, sophomore Chris Deprez would go 7-3 to lead MU.

Marian takes on No. 15 St. Scholastica tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 20, at 3 p.m. from Blue Line Family Ice Center.
