Sabre baseball swept by pair of MIAC teams

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TUCSON, Ariz. - Marian University baseball (2-7, 0-0 NACC) was defeated by a pair of MIAC teams falling to Augsburg 10-8 and Macalester 7-2.

In the opener, Marian lead 7-0 heading into the bottom of the second but the Auggies rallied with a five-run eighth inning to defeat Marian.  The Sabres started fast plating four runs before Augsburg even came to the plate.  Senior Jordan Walker drove in sophomore Nick Bastien to open the scoring before freshman Nick Dugandzic brought in Falker.  Junior Jake Falish brought in senior Michael Pappas and freshman Josh Gates was able to plate Dugandzic to cap off the inning.

The Sabres then went back to work in the second with three runs opening with a double from freshman Anthony Sottile to score sophomore Steven Schauer.  Pappas would then drive in Bastien before a sacrifice fly from Dugandzic scored Walker to put MU ahead 7-0.

The Augsburg rally began in the bottom half of the second with three runs and another pair of runs in the third to put the score at 7-5.  Walker padded the Marian lead with a solo home run in the top of the seventh to extend the Marian lead to three runs.  The Auggies then put together a big inning in the eighth plating five runs, two unearned, to take their first lead of the game.

Sophomore Tim Dziergas provided 4.2 innings of relief work allowing three runs with a pair of punch outs.  Offensively, Walker led the way going 3-4 with three runs scored and a pair of runs batted in, while Bastien and Pappas each had multi-hit games.

The Sabre bats then struggled in game two against Macalester only managing two runs on three hits.  Both runs came in the fourth inning with senior Hunter Berry being hit by a pitch to force a run home and Sottile bringing freshman Sean Meyer.  This would be the only rally Marian would manage, however, in a 7-2 defeat.

Freshman Garrett Martin (1-1) went 6.0 innings in his second start of the year striking out seven.  Fellow freshman Logan Bosquez also provided 1.1 innings of one-hit ball.  Junior Travis Slywka was the lone Sabre with a multi-hit game going 2-4.

Marian closes out the annual spring trip taking on Dubuque tomorrow, Thursday, Mach 15, at 3:30 p.m. (CDT).
