Sabre baseball salvages split with Raiders

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILWAUKEE - Marian University baseball (7-13, 3-3 NACC) bounced back after falling to MSOE 4-2 in the opener of a NACC twin bill to defeat the Raiders 15-4 in eight innings.

MSOE opened the scoring for the day in the bottom of the second inning but their lead wouldn't last long as Marian tied the game in the next half inning.  Sophomore Nick Bastien doubled down the left field line before advancing to third on a wild pitch and then was driven in by senior Hunter Berry with a single.

The Raiders then broke through in the fourth inning plating three runs to take a 4-1 lead in what proved to be the difference.  The scoreboard would then be filled with goose eggs until the Sabres put together a rally in the ninth inning.  The Sabres would get the tying run to the plate after junior Jake Falish singled in freshman Ryan Ellingson with two outs but the Raiders would hold off the Sabres.

Freshman Logan Bosquez didn't factor in the decision but tossed 4.1 innings of scoreless relief only allowing four base hits. Offensively, Berry led the Sabres at the top of the lineup going 3-4 with one run driven in.

In the finale of the series, the Marian bats came alive in a big way and produced their first mercy-rule win of the season.  The Sabres jumped all over MSOE in the first half inning with senior Michael Pappas, Falish and freshman Sean Meyer all bringing in runs.  The Raiders answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning but the Sabres put up another three spot in the second.

Falish once again brought in a run to open the scoring for the inning before a double from junior Travis Slywka scored two.  Berry then padded the Marian lead with a single in the fifth plated Slywka before a home run from the Raiders provided the equalizer.

The Sabres were then able to break the game open late with four runs in both the seventh and eighth inning.  Senior Jordan Walker opened the scoring for the seventh before a double from Pappas plated a pair and Falish drove in Pappas with a single.  Berry then produced another run-scoring hit to open the eighth before a three-run homer from Walker.  The Raiders would get a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth but were unable to force a ninth inning.

Freshman Garrett Martin (2-2) shook off a slow start to earn the complete-game victory allowing three earned runs with six punch outs and only allowing seven hits.  Berry led the Sabres in hits for the second game as well going 4-6 with three runs scored and two driven in.  Walker led the Sabres with four runs driven in going 3-5 with three runs scored as well, while Pappas and Falish each drove in three runs.

Marian is scheduled to host Dominican Sunday, April 15 for a noon conference doubleheader from Herr-Baker Field.
