No. 2 Marian ACHA hockey clinches second NCHL championship

FOND DU LAC / MILWAUKEE - Marian University ACHA hockey (23-1-2, 13-0-1 NCHL) clinched their second NCHL championship defeating Marquette 4-3 in overtime at home before tying the Golden Eagles 4-4 on the road.

In a series that pitted the top two teams in the NCHL, both games proved to be tight and required overtime.  The opener of the series at Blue Line saw Marquette jump out early scoring a pair of goals in the first 5:56, a lead they took into the first intermission.  The Sabres then answered with Connor Martin and Jake Weldon each lighting the lamp in the second period, Paul Kinder and Brandon Mills assisted the Weldon goal.

The third period saw the Sabres take the lead just 47 seconds in as Colin Wilson scored with assists to Jarod Lang and Miles Giorgione.  The lead didn't last long, however, as Marquette answered with an equalizer just six seconds later.  In the overtime session, Connor Rosaasen gave the Sabres a victory after burying a rebound 1:25 into overtime, assists to Tyren Boots and Lang.

The Sabres finished the game with a commanding 39-25 advantage in shots with Justin Davidson making 22 saves in net to earn the victory.

The finale saw a different start with Marian jumping out to an early 2-0 lead after one period thanks to goals from Sheamus Stoyle and Devin Chmura.  Boots assisted both goals and Martin also earned an assist on the Chmura goal.  The second period saw Marquette draw even with the Sabres scoring three goals with a Mills goal serving as the equalizer for Marian.  A Daniel Roe goal in the third period answered a Golden Eagle goal to once again send the game into overtime where the two squads settled for a tie.

The Sabres held a slight advantage in shots at 33-30 with Davidson making another 26 saves in the game.

Marian completes their NCHL schedule at Northern Michigan February 1-2 with the opener at 6 p.m. and the finale at noon.  Both games will be played at Lakeview Arena.
