Marian baseball knocks off Saint John's (Minn.) 13-7

Box Score

TUCSON, Ariz. - Marian University baseball (5-1, 0-0) scored in all but one inning as the Sabres defeated Saint John's (Minn.) 13-7 at the Tucson Invitational.

The Johnnies were able to get on the board right away scoring two in the first inning before sacrifice flies form sophomore Sean Meyer and junior Jake Arens tied the game in the bottom half of the opening frame.  SJU retook the lead with another run in the top of the second but the Sabres managed to take the lead after sophomore Nick Dugandzic was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and junior Nick Bastien scored off of an error.

Marian extended on their lead in the bottom of the third plating four runs after three-consecutive bases-loaded walks and an RBI single from Meyer.  A pair of errors then allowed Marian to continue to extend on their lead the next two innings.  In the fourth, freshman Sam Nemetz was able to come around to score off of an error.  Then in the fifth, Meyer laid down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown into right field and allowed senior Matt Nordlund to cross the plate and put Marian ahead 10-3.

Saint John's (Minn.) wouldn't go away quietly scoring three runs in the sixth inning but a 1-2-3 double play from the Marian defense was able to end the inning.  A single from Dugandzic in the bottom half of the inning brought in Bastien to put the Marian advantage to 11-6.  The Johnnies once again responded, however, as a single run in the seventh cut the Marian lead down to 11-7.

The Sabres were able to create a little breathing room in the bottom of the eighth opening the inning with a pair of bunt singles from Bastien and senior Jake Falish.  A wild pitch put the duo in scoring position and they each would score following a sacrifice fly from Nordlund and a single from Meyer.  Senior Connor Nelson was then able to come in for the top of the ninth and shut the door only allowing one walk with two punch outs.

Junior Drew Nuanes (1-0) earned the victory tossing 4.1 innings out of the bullpen recording five punch outs.  Sophomore Logan Bosquez also had a strong performance out of the bullpen going 2.2 innings only allowing three hits with a pair of strikeouts.

The top four hitters in the Marian lineup each had multi-hit games and went a combined 9-16 (.563) led by Meyer who finished 3-4 with three driven in.  Dugandzic also drove in three runs, while Falish scored three times.

Marian takes the day off tomorrow before taking on Hamline at 2 p.m. (CDT) and Macalester at approximately 5:30 p.m. (CDT) Wednesday, March 20.
