Marian baseball earns first NACC sweep over MSOE

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FOND DU LAC - Marian University baseball (13-8, 5-5 NACC) earned their first conference sweep of the season defeating MSOE 6-5 in 10 innings and 6-2.

Marian led for most of the opener before a late rally from the Raiders forced extra innings.  A two-RBI single from junior Jake Arens in the bottom of the third opened the scoring before a pair of doubles from MSOE tied the game in the next half inning.  The Sabres made sure the tie didn't last long as senior Matt Nordlund drove in sophomore Nick Dugandzic to give Marian a 3-2 lead after four innings.

A sacrifice fly from Arens in the seventh expanded the lead to two with both teams scoring a run in the eighth to put the score at 5-3 heading to the ninth.  Sophomore Michael Snow provided a double in the eighth that was able to drive in fellow sophomore Jonah Landowski.

The Raiders were able to rally in the ninth to score a pair of runs and tie the game at 5-5.  MSOE continued their push loading the bases with one out in the 10th inning but back-to-back strikeouts ended the frame.  Nordlund then wasted no time finishing the game taking the first pitch of the bottom of the 10th deep to left field for his second homer of the year.

Senior Ty Peccioli went 6.1 innings allowing just two earned runs with eight strikeouts in the start, while junior Tim Dziergas earned the victory striking out three over 2.0 innings and only allowing two hits.

Offensively, seven of the Marian starters had at least one hit with Nordlund having the only multi-hit game going 2-for-5 with a run scored and two driven in.  Arens finished with three runs driven in for the opener.

The second game proved to be a pitching duel with a late Marian rally securing the sweep.  MSOE opened the scoring in the third with a run only to have Arens blast a two-out solo home run in the bottom half of the inning for his fifth homer of the year.  The Raiders retook the lead in the next half inning at 2-1 with that score standing until the eighth.

Nordlund opened the scoring for the Marian eighth with an RBI single to tie the game with zero outs.  The remaining runs came with two outs opening with a two-RBI double from senior Jake Falish.  Snow followed that with a single to plate junior Landon Gosch with an error on the play also scoring Falish.  This gave Marian a 6-2 lead which they would hold after a quiet ninth inning.

Senior Jordan Bock (4-0) battled to toss a complete game allowing only two runs with six strikeouts.  Marian once again had a balanced offense with eight Sabres recording at least one hit.  Falish, Nordlund, and senior Travis Slywka all had multi-hit games with Falish also driving in a pair with his eighth-inning double.

Marian hits the road to take on Dominican Tuesday, April 16 for a 3 p.m. NACC doubleheader.
