Sabre baseball splits on the road at Dominican

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - Marian University baseball (14-9, 6-6 NACC) defeated Dominican 10-0 in eight innings before falling to the Starts 5-4 to split a road NACC series.

The opener saw Marian score nine runs in the final three innings to back an impressive start from sophomore Garrett Martin.  Sophomore Jonah Landowski opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the second inning and added another sacrifice fly in the sixth following an RBI double from senior Matt Nordlund.

The Sabres then took advantage of an error in the seventh inning to plate four runs.  Sophomore Michael Snow drove in a run to open the inning with fellow sophomore Sean Meyer laying down a sacrifice bunt later in the inning that plated a run due to an error.  Sophomore Nick Dugandzic hit a single down the third base line to plate a pair of runs and put Marian ahead 7-0.  A two-RBI double from junior Jake Arens and a run-scoring off the double play in the eighth helped seal the mercy-rule win.

Martin (4-0) was dominant tossing a complete game only allowing two hits with 14 punch outs as he stayed perfect on the season.  Senior Jake Falish had a 3-for-5 game at the top of the Marian lineup with two runs, while Dugandzic also went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two driven in.

Marian started the scoring for game two right away in the first with an error allowing Arens to score an unearned run.  The Stars responded with a run in the fourth and took advantage of two Marian errors in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.

The Sabres responded in the sixth inning with Meyer and Dugandzic each driving in a run.  Marian was then able to tie the game in the eighth inning with a Meyer single bringing in Snow to put the score at 4-4.  Dominican was able to salvage a split in the bottom of the ninth, however, with a walk-off wild pitch.

Brady Nehring went 4.1 innings allowing only one earned run and scattering three hits, while junior Tim Dziergas (1-1) tossed 4.0 innings allowing no earned runs and also allowing three hits.

Meyer paced the offense going 3-for-4 with two runs driven in and a run scored, while Snow also produced a multi-hit game.

Marian returns home to take on Aurora Saturday, April 20 at noon for a NACC twin bill.
