Marian baseball defeats IIT 6-4 before fog halts play

Box Score

MEQUON, Wis. - Marian University baseball (19-12, 10-9 NACC) scored six runs in the first four innings to defeat Illinois Tech 6-4 in the first half of a NACC twin bill before fog forced the suspension of game two.

The Sabres jumped all over the Scarlet Hawks opening with four-consecutive hits in the bottom of the first.  Junior Jake Arens drove in a run before senior Matt Nordlund hit a two-out RBI single to put Marian ahead 2-0.  Illinois Tech responded in the next half inning with a run before Marian added on to their lead.

A wild pitch with the bases loaded started the scoring in the third before a sacrifice fly from sophomore Jonah Landowski put Marian ahead 4-1 after three.  The Sabres added another pair of runs on the fourth opening with a fielder's choice RBI from sophomore Sean Meyer.  Sophomore Nick Dugandzic then hit a sacrifice fly to bring in an unearned to put Marian ahead 6-1 after four.

Illinois Tech managed to make things interesting with two runs in the sixth and a two-out rally in the ninth but Marian was able to hold off the rally.

Senior Jordan Bock (5-1) had a big start going 8.2 innings scattering eight hits and striking out seven hitters.  Junior Tim Dziergas was able to record the final out to earn his first save of the season.

Offensively, six different Sabres scored in the victory with sophomore Michael Snow and Meyer each recording a multi-hit game.

Fog would play a factor for game two with Illinois Tech taking a 4-0 lead in the top of the fourth before play would be halted.  A make-up date for the remainder of the game has yet to be announced.

Marian is scheduled to take on Ripon tomorrow, Tuesday, April 30 at 7 p.m. from Herr-Baker Field in non-conference action.
