Marian softball bounces back with sweep of Rockford

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FOND DU LAC - Marian University softball (13-9, 5-3 NACC) swept Rockford at home in NACC action with scores of 4-1 and 10-0 in five innings.

The opener saw both offenses struggle after the first inning but a quick start from the Sabres allowed Marian to open the twin bill with a win.  After Rockford scored in the top half of the first the Sabres were able to string together three consecutive hits with two outs capped off by a three-RBI double from freshman Hannah Cozzi

The double gave Marian a 3-1 lead but more two-out magic in the fourth allowed the Sabres to extend their lead.  Junior Ally Fox opened the two-out rally with a single to right field and stole second base before senior Lindsey Strainis drove her in with a single to center.

This proved to be enough for Marian as Paige Rauhut (6-5) settled down after the opening frame to go the distance allowing just four hits with five punch outs.  Offensively, sophomores Peyton Loesch and Alexa Rodriguez each had multi-hit games.

The Marian offense then scored in all four innings of game two to cruise to the sweep.  A sacrifice fly from Loesch and an RBI double from sophomore Katy Croeker opened the scoring in the first.  The Sabres extended that lead in the second with a bases-loaded walk from junior Taylor Lauscher before rain and lightning caused a 56-minute rain delay.

The Sabres put the game away following the rain delay scoring six runs in the third.  Freshmen Melanie Weigel and Andrea Meagher opened the scoring with RBI singles before Fox drove in a run with a double.  A wild pitch later allowed Fox to score with a single from Loesch capping off the scoring.  Weigel then hit a long fly ball off the fence in left field to plate a run in the fourth to close the scoring for the game.

Sophomore Myranda Schuttenhelm (6-2) went the distance allowing only three hits over 5.0 innings to earn the win in the circle.  Weigel finished 3-for-3 at the dish with two runs scored and two driven in, while Loesch and Meagher each drove in multiple runs as well.

Marian is scheduled to take on Lawrence Thursday, April 11 for a 3 p.m. non-conference twin bill.
