Sabre baseball closes out winningest season in NACC era

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MEQUON, Wis. - Marian University baseball (24-15, 12-10 NACC) defeated Illinois Tech 7-6 in 12 innings to open day two of the NACC tournament but were then eliminated by Concordia Wisconsin by a 4-2 final.

Marian trailed late in their third meeting with Illinois Tech but a late rally lifted the Sabres to their first NACC tournament win.  A three-run third from the Sabres opened the scoring with junior Nick Bastien and sophomore Michael Snow each driving in a run.  The Scarlet Hawks quickly took the lead with two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth before a sacrifice fly from sophomore Nick Dugandzic tied the game at 4-4 after five.

Illinois Tech responded in the next half inning taking a 6-4 lead.  With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Bastien was able to drive in a pair of runs with a double to tie the game at 6-6 and force extras.  Marian would strand seven runs between the ninth, 10th, and 11th innings but were unable to plate a run.

The bottom of the 12th opened with a pair of outs only to have an error and single put a pair of runs on.  Sophomore Sean Meyer was able to draw a hit by pitch to load the bases before Dugandzic singled to give Marian the walk-off win.

Junior Tim Dziergas (3-1) tossed 6.2 innings of relief to earn the win allowing only three hits.  Dugandzic had a three-hit game to lead the offense, while Bastien drove in three runs at the bottom of the lineup.  All nine Marian starters recorded a hit as Marian totaled 16 in the victory.

Marian put together another strong rally in their second game against CUW but fell just short being eliminated by the Falcons.  The Sabres were on the board first in the elimination game when senior Matt Nordlund was able to lift a sacrifice fly into center field in the fourth.

The Falcons answered right back, however, in the bottom half to tie the game and used a three-run homer in the next frame to take a 4-1 lead.  The Sabres didn't go away quietly with five of the first six hitters reaching base.  Senior Travis Slywka drew a bases-loaded walk to cut the deficit down to 4-2 but the Falcons held off the bases-loaded rally to eliminate the Sabres.

Senior Brady Nehring (1-2) tossed 5.0 innings only allowing five hits, while junior Drew Nuanes threw the final 3.0 innings without allowing a hit.  Offensively, junior Jake Arens went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Marian closes out the 2019 campaign with a 24-15 record marking the most wins for a single season during the NACC era.
