Marian baseball clinches NACC tourney spot with sweep of Edgewood

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FOND DU LAC - Marian University baseball (21-12, 12-9 NACC) was able to clinch a spot in the NACC tournament behind a 10-0 win in seven innings and a 6-1 victory in a sweep of Edgewood.

After three scoreless frames, Marian was able to take advantage of an Eagle error to plate seven runs in the fourth inning of game one.  Sophomore Jonah Landowski hit a double to score a pair to open the inning with a fielder's choice three batters later bringing in another run.  Then with two outs, sophomore Michael Snow and junior Jake Arens each plated a run with RBI hits before sophomore Sean Meyer capped off the inning with a two-RBI single.

Marian was then able to take advantage of another pair of errors in the seventh to secure the mercy-rule win.  A sacrifice bunt from senior Jake Falish was thrown away to plate the first run of the inning then Arens was able to drive in another run with a single.  The game would come to an end after an errant throw from the catcher trying to catch Falish at third base went into left field.

Senior Ty Peccioli (4-2) earned the shutout allowing just two hits with seven punch outs.  Meyer continued to hit the ball going 4-for-4 with two runs driven in and a run scored.  Snow, Arens, and senior Matt Nordlund each had multi-hit games as well.

A lot of clutch hitting in game two would allow the Sabres to earn a sweep.  Marian plated single runs in the first five innings and scored their sixth run in the eighth inning as the Sabres were able to show consistent offense throughout the lineup.

Arens opened the scoring with a two-out solo blast, his sixth of the year, in the bottom of the first.  Falish then drove in a run in the second with sophomore Nick Dugandzic doubling in a run in the third.  The fourth inning saw Meyer double in a run with two outs and the fifth had Falish drive in another two-out run.

Edgewood scored their first run of the day in the top of the eighth before an RBI single from Arens closed out the scoring in the bottom half of the inning.

Senior Jordan Bock (6-1) earned the victory tossing 8.0 innings allowing just five hits with eight strikeouts.  The Sabre bats continued to hit well in game two with the first five hitters in the lineup going a combined 12-for-21 (.571).  Arens led the way with four hits and a pair of runs driven in, while Meyer added another three hits.

With the sweep, Marian surpasses 20 wins for only the third time in the NACC era.

Marian returns to action tomorrow, Sunday, May 5, to finish their suspended game with Illinois Tech at 1 p.m. from Herr-Baker Field.  The Scarlet Hawks lead the Sabres 4-0 in the top of the fourth inning.
