Marian baseball earns sweep of Bethany Lutheran

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TUCSON, Ariz. - Marian University baseball (3-4, 0-0 NACC) earned their first sweep of the season defeating Bethany Lutheran 15-3 and 5-1.

The Vikings were able to open the doubleheader with a 2-0 lead after three but the Sabre offense went on to score 15 runs in the final four innings.  Junior Nick Dugandzic drove in a run in the fourth inning before Marian scored five runs in the fifth to take the lead for good.  Senior Aaron Schauer tripled to bring in a run and freshman Ryan Palmquist later tied the game at 3-3 with a single.  Senior Jake Arens put a stamp on the inning with a double that plated a pair to put the Sabres ahead 6-3.  A double from Dugandzic brought in another run in the sixth before the Sabres really broke the game open with seven runs in the seventh.

Freshman Robbie Knorr brought in a pair of runs to open the scoring for the inning followed by an RBI hit from sophomore Sam Nemetz.  Palmquist kept the line moving with an RBI single, which was followed by run-producing hits from Dugandzic and freshman Luke Fiantago.

Dugandzic and Arens each had three hits with Dugandzic driving in five runs.  Junior Jonah Landowski scored four times in the win, while Palmquist finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a pair driven in.  Junior Garrett Martin (2-0) had another strong performance earning a complete-game win striking out nine.

Marian was able to jump out to an early lead in game two and strong pitching held up to complete a sweep.  Arens wasted no time driving in Dugandzic in the first inning to give Marian the lead.  Doubles from juniors Sean Meyer and Josh Gates in the third gave the Sabres a 3-0 lead.  After a solo home run from BLC in the top of the fourth, Marian responded in the bottom half with a single from Landowski scoring a pair to set the final at 5-1.

Meyer had the lone multi-hit game going 2-for-3 with Dugandzic scoring two runs.  Senior Zach Sandoval (1-0) tossed 5.0 innings with six strikeouts to earn the win, while fellow senior Tim Dziergas allowed one hit in one inning of relief and junior Taylor Middaugh had a perfect seventh to close out the game.

Marian closes out their spring trip taking on Gustavus Adolphus tomorrow, Thursday, March 12 at 5 p.m. (CDT).
