Sabre softball salvages split in home opener against UW-Oshkosh

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FOND DU LAC - Marian University softball (6-4, 0-0 NACC) fell to UW-Oshkosh 4-2 in the opener before defeating the Titans 8-3 in the finale of a non-conference twin bill.

Marian was able to steal a run in the bottom of the second when a first-and-third double steal led to sophomore Julia Corona scoring.  The Titans were able to string together some hits in the fourth inning and took the lead with a four-run inning.  Marian didn't go away quietly, however, putting together a rally in the bottom of the seventh.

The Sabres began the final inning with back-to-back pinch-hit singles from freshman Katelyn Matenaer and sophomore Emalee Depa.  Senior Peyton Loesch would drive in a run to cut the Marian deficit down to 4-2 later in the inning.  Marian would manage to get the tying run into scoring position but the Titans were able to secure the 4-2 win.

Senior Paige Rauhut (3-2) struck out six hitters tossing her fifth complete game of the season.  Corona had the lone multi-hit game for Marian going 2-for-2 with a run scored.

The Sabres were able to get out to a fast start in game two scoring five runs in the bottom of the first.  A wild pitch opened the scoring as senior Alexa Rodriguez was able to come across and score.  Then Corona and sophomore Izzy Gonzalez hit back-to-back doubles with each double plating a pair of runs.  UW-Oshkosh rallied to cut the Marian lead down to 5-3 after two runs in the third inning.

The fifth inning saw Marian build some insurance when junior Melanie Weigel was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Corona hit a sacrifice fly to put the Sabres ahead 7-3.  An RBI single from sophomore Kaley Ludvigsen in the sixth gave Marian even more cushion for what eventually was an 8-3 win.

Junior Cailie Pliner (2-2) went 4.0 innings allowing just two earned runs, while Depa earned her first save of the season going 3.0 innings allowing just three hits and no runs.  Ludvigsen led the offense going 4-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Corona drove in three runs.

The victory in game two snapped a 14-game losing streak for Marian softball against UW-Oshkosh.

Marian travels to Benedictine for a midweek doubleheader Wednesday, March 24 with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
