Box Score 1 CHICAGO - Both offenses produced plenty of runs but Marian University baseball (3-9, 0-0 NACC) suffered a sweep at Illinois Tech with final scores of 11-9 and 18-8.
The Sabres led early in game one but a big second inning from IIT gave the Scarlet Hawks the lead for good. A single from junior Ricky Lee opened the scoring for the game before junior Josh Gates scored later in the first to give Marian a 2-0 early lead. Senior Sean Meyer was able to drive in a run in the second before a bases loaded walk from Gates put the Sabres ahead 4-1. The Scarlet Hawks then scored seven runs in their half of the second inning to go up 8-4.
Marian was able to score once in the fourth and then cut their deficit down to one in the fifth at 10-9. Sophomore Riley Palquist hit a sacrifice fly to start the fifth before senior Michael Snow doubled in a pair of runs and stole home later in the inning. This would be as close as Marian would get, however, as the Sabres were held scoreless the remainder of the game.
Meyer finished the game going 4-for-5 with a run scored and one driven in, while fellow senior Nick Bastien also had a multi-hit game and scored twice. Junior Taylor Middaugh provided 6.1 innings of relief allowing just one earned run and scattering six hits.
The second game had a similar script as Marian held an early lead before Illinois Tech pulled away late. Trailing 2-0 in the second, Marian was able to plate three runs with Meyer driving in another run. The Scarlet Hawks then scored five runs between the fourth and fifth innings. Senior Jake Arens was able to drive in a run in the sixth to cut the IIT lead down to three.
After another two runs in the seventh for IIT, the Sabres were able to score three runs in the seventh to only trail 9-7. A double from Snow in the eighth proved to be the final run-producing hit for the Sabres as IIT tacked on six runs in the ninth to seal the sweep.
Snow had the only multi-hit game in game two going 2-for-5 with a run scored and one driven in.
Marian travels to Concordia Chicago Thursday, April 1 for a noon twin bill.
