Marian baseball sweeps CUW to take first series of NACC play

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FOND DU LAC - Marian University baseball (7-15, 3-1 NACC) earned a dramatic 12-11 walk-off win in the opener before defeating CUW 13-3 in seven innings to complete a sweep of the Falcons.

Concordia Wisconsin scored in five of the first six innings as the Falcons were able to take a 10-2 lead going into the bottom of the sixth.  The lone runs for the Sabres came on a home run from senior Jake Arens to deep left-center, his first of the season.

After recording the first two outs of the bottom of the sixth, the Sabres put together a rally that saw Marian plate six runs on six hits to bring the game to 10-8.  Each team plated a run in the seventh before Marian was able to complete the comeback in the ninth.  Arens led off the inning by being hit by a pitch before junior Josh Gates lifted his second long ball of the season to tie the game at 11.  The Falcons were then able to record two straight outs before a double from senior Nick Bastien was followed by a single from sophomore Caleb Dohms to secure the 12-11 victory.

Bastien paced the offense going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a run driven in, while Gates (1-0) went 2-for-3 and earned the win on the bump tossing the final 3.0 innings and allowing just three hits and one run.

Marian used their momentum from game one to score nine runs in the first four innings and cruise to a mercy-rule victory.  The Sabres were able to take advantage of errors in the first inning to plate three runs with Bastien, Arens, and junior Ricky Lee each driving in runs.  A double from sophomore Robbie Knorr in the second highlighted another two-run inning in the second to put Marian ahead 5-1.

The Falcons cut the lead to two at 5-3 before Marina scored eight unanswered runs.  Lee and Arens each hit doubles that produced runs in the fifth, while freshman Logan Rademan was able to end the game in the seventh with a single that produced a pair of runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

Sophomore Davis Wilson (1-2) earned the win tossing the final 4.0 innings and only allowing one hit.  Six Sabre hitters had multiple hits led by senior Michael Snow who went 3-for-4 with four runs scored.  Arens finished the game driving in five runs.

Marian remains at home to take on Wisconsin Lutheran Saturday, April 17 for a noon first pitch.
