Sabre baseball splits with Northland to close out non-conference play

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FOND DU LAC - Marian University baseball (14-18, 9-3 NACC) defeated Northland 15-2 before falling to the LumberJacks 6-4 in nine innings to close out non-conference play.

The opener was all Marian as the Sabres scored three runs in the first, four in the third, and eight in the fourth to cruise to a win.  Seniors Jake Arens and Jonah Landowski each drove in runs in the first with Arens also plating a run in the third.  Sophomore Riley Palmquist also plated a run in the third inning.

The Sabres broke the game open in the fourth with six of their eight runs being unearned.  Palmquist and senior Sean Meyer each drove in a pair of runs for the inning, while Landowski had a sacrifice fly and senior Nick Bastien had a run-producing single.

Freshman Andrew Schroeder produced his first hits as a Sabre and went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, while Meyer also went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a pair of runs driven in.  Freshman Ryan Walters (1-0) earned the first victory of his Marian career going 5.0 innings allowing just four hits and a pair of unearned runs.

The night cap needed extras as the game was originally scheduled for seven innings with Northland managing to salvage a split.  The LumberJacks were on the board first scoring a run in the second and third.  Marian responded taking the lead in the third with a double from Joe Koscinski that scored a pair of runs followed by a sacrifice fly from fellow freshman Caleb Dohms.  A wild pitch following a double steal in the fourth inning padded the Marian lead as freshman Tyler Blum was able to score.

Northland was able to rally, however, tying the game at 4-4 with a pair of runs in the sixth.  A pitching duel then ensued until Northland scored a pair of runs in the ninth with two outs to earn the 6-4 win.

Schroeder had a strong start tossing 5.0 innings allowing just four hits and two earned runs, while junior Josh Gates provided 2.1 innings of relief allowing just one hit.

Marian returns to NACC action hosting MSOE Saturday, May 1 for a noon first pitch.
