Marian softball splits with No. 24 MSOE to open final NACC series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FOND DU LAC - Marian University softball (22-16, 10-8 NACC) was defeated 8-1 by No. 24 MSOE in game one of a NACC doubleheader but bounced back in game two for a 4-3 win.

The opener was all MSOE as the Raiders scored a run in the first, four in the third, and three more in the seventh.  Junior Melanie Weigel was able to give the Sabres some momentum going into game two when she hit a solo home run, her sixth long ball of the season, in the bottom of the seventh.  Junior Cailie Pliner had a strong relief appearance going 3.1 innings allowing just two earned runs.

The Raiders opened the scoring in the first inning of game two as well before Marian took their first lead of the day.  Sophomore Julia Corona was able to sneak a two-run homer inside the foul pole down the left field line for her fifth long ball of the season giving the Sabres a 2-1 advantage.  MSOE managed to tie the game in the fourth at 2-2 but this tie didn't last long as Marian would take the lead for good.

Senior Alexa Rodriguez opened the frame with a deep solo home run to left center, her 10th of the year, to put the Sabres ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth.  Later in the inning, freshman Katelyn Matenaer was able to drive in a run with two outs with a single to put the Sabres ahead 4-2.  MSOE scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth, but the Sabres were able to hold off the rally for a 4-3 win.

Corona and Matenaer each had multi-hit games, while Weigel reached base twice after drawing a pair of walks.  Sophomore Emalee Depa (12-3) notched another victory going 5.0 innings allowing just four hits and two runs.  Senior Paige Rauhut bounced back from a tough game one start to earn her second save of the year going 2.0 innings and allowing just one base knock.

Marian travels to No. 24 MSOE tomorrow, Saturday, May 1, to close out the four-game set at noon to close out the regular season.
