Box Score 2 FOND DU LAC - Marian University baseball (14-20, 9-5 NACC) was swept at home for only the second time this season falling to MSOE 17-11 and 7-3.
A slugfest broke out in game one with heavy winds out to left field at Herr-Baker Field. The Raiders opened the scoring in a big way with six runs coming in the first half inning. A bases-loaded hit by pitch from senior Michael Snow and sacrifice fly from another senior in Sean Meyer cut the Marian deficit down to 6-2.
The Raiders extended their lead out to 10 going into the bottom of the sixth, but the Sabres wouldn't go away quietly. Marian plated two runs in the sixth and five more in the seventh to bring the score to 12-9. Junior Ricky Lee drove in a run in each inning, while sophomore Riley Palmquist had a two-RBI single in the seventh.
MSOE was quickly able to extend their lead, however, plating four more runs in the fourth and another in the ninth. An RBI single from freshman Andrew Schroeder and sacrifice fly from Palmquist in the ninth then set the final at 17-11.
Lee had the lone multi-hit game going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two more driven in.
The second game was much closer with the Sabres striking in the first with a run-producing single from junior Josh Gates. MSOE managed to tie the game in the top of the fourth, but a Raider error in the bottom half quickly put the Marian lead back at 2-1.
MSOE chipped away to take their first lead of game two scoring a run in the fifth, sixth, and eighth. The Raiders then broke the game open with three runs in the ninth to go up 7-2. A sacrifice fly from Gates in the bottom of the ninth was all Marian could manage in the last inning as the final stood at 7-3.
The Sabre offense only managed five hits with Lee going 1-for-3 and reaching on a pair of walks. Junior Taylor Middaugh (4-2) went 7.1 innings scattering 11 hits and allowing just four runs with just as many punch outs.
Marian travels to MSOE to close out the series tomorrow, Sunday, May 2, for a noon first pitch.
