Box Score 2 FOND DU LAC - With the help of Edgewood, Marian University baseball (19-21, 14-6 NACC) secured a NACC North Championship with a pair of 10-3 wins over Lakeland.
Marian scored the first five runs of game one and then put together a five-run seventh inning to take the opener. A pair of RBI groundouts opened the scoring for the Sabres in the first. Senior Jake Arens drove in a run to open the third before first-and-third double steal put Marian ahead 4-0. After an RBI groundout from senior Jonah Landowski in the fourth, the Muskies were able to score in the fifth to put the game at 5-1.
Then in the seventh, Arens opened the inning with a double to drive in fellow senior Sean Meyer before wild pitches scored Arens and senior Mike Snow. Another double steal and RBI single from senior Nick Bastien put Marian ahead 10-1. After the Muskies put up two runs in the eighth the final would be set at 10-3.
Bastien and Arens each had three hits to lead the offense with Arens also driving in three runs. Landowski (2-1) earned the win after going 5.0 innings allowing just two hits with six punch outs.
The Sabres were able to get out to another fast start in game two scoring all 10 of their runs in the first five innings. Marian scored four runs in the first taking advantage of a Lakeland error. Meyer and Landowski drove in a run each in the second and third before a double from junior Ricky Lee put Marian ahead 7-0 after four innings.
Sophomore Robbie Knorr and Meyer then each drove in a run in the fifth to put the Sabres ahead 10-0. Lakeland would manage to plate three runs in the sixth to avoid a mercy-rule loss, but the Sabres were able to complete the sweep.
In the second game, Bastien was able to record the 78th stolen base of his career setting a new all-time Marian record.
Meyer led the offense going 3-for-5 with three runs driven in, while Bastien and Knorr each scored three times. Senior Noah Imrie (2-5) went 5.1 allowing just four hits to earn the win with sophomore Mac Doherty earning a save after tossing the final 3.2 innings and only allowing two hits.
With MSOE splitting on the road at Edgewood in other NACC action, Marian was able to secure a NACC North Championship and top seed for the NACC North Tournament. Marian will take on the Muskies to open the NACC North Tournament Friday, May 14.
