Marian ACHA D2 earns pair of wins at home showcase

FOND DU LAC - Marian University ACHA D2 (3-3-0, 0-0-0 NCHL) defeated Dakota Bottineau 3-1 and Davenport 5-2 before falling to Adrian 5-4.

The Sabres were able to open the home showcase with a strong performance against Dakota Bottineau.  Dean Whitcomb opened the scoring in the first period but the Lumberjacks were able to tie the game in the second period as the two squads were knotted at 1-1 heading into the third.  Karl Lavoie was able to net the game-winner at the 11:54 mark before Colby Sherlock added an empty-net goal to put the final at 3-1.  The Sabres outshot Dakota Bottineau 42-27 in the game with Will MCCreight earning the win with 26 saves in goal.  Dawson Schwengler had a pair of assists in the victory.

Marian had a slow start against Davenport but a dominating second period lifted the Sabres to a second straight win.  Davenport held a 1-0 lead after the first period despite Marian outshooting the Panthers 20-7.  The Sabres then netted four goals in the second period to take a 4-1 advantage.  Zach Wilson opened the scoring before Whitcomb and Shay Nolen found the back of the net.  Carter Broton then closed out the scoring for the period.  After a Davenport power-play goal opened the third, Simon Ellingson scored to put the final at 5-2.  Marian had another heavy advantage in shots at 51-25 with Matt Bilsborough making 23 stops.

Both offenses exploded in the final match-up of the showcase with Adrian earning a tough one-goal win.  Lavoie opened the scoring with a power-play score before Adrian scored twice to go ahead 2-1.  Lavoie then netted his second power-play goal of the period only to have Adrian score 25 seconds later to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead after one.  It took Wilson just 41 seconds to tie the game but Adrian had an answer at the 18:05 mark to retake the lead.  Ellingson then responded just 36 seconds later to send the game into the third tied at 4-4.  Adrian would score 4:16 into the final period and this proved to be the lone goal of the period as the defenses bounced back after a tough two periods.  Marian led in shots for the game at 37-31 with McArthur making 26 saves.

Marian travels to the Lindenwood Showcase Oct. 14-16 taking on Flordia Gulf Coast, Sault, and Lindenwood.
