BLAINE, Minn. - Marian ACHA Division II (1-2-0, 0-0-0 NCHL) opened the season falling to Mary 3-0 and Liberty 3-2 before defeating Minnesota 4-2.
In the season opener, Mary scored just one goal in each period and the Sabres were unable to light the lamp. The Sabres were only outshot 32-22 for the game after a slow start.Â
Will McCreight was able to make 29 saves in goal for the Sabres. The second game of the showcase had the Sabres drop a one-goal game to Liberty with a box score unavailable at the time of this release.
Marian was able to end the showcase strong earning the first win of the season defeating Minnesota. The Sabres were able to get out to a quick start scoring twice in the opening period.Â
Ben Borreson opened the scoring before
Dean Whitcomb lit the lamp in the final minute of the period. Minnesota scored the lone goal of the second period but Marian opened the scoring for the third to build the lead back to 3-1.Â
Simon Ellingson found the back of the net for Marian on a power play with assists to
Jason Vogler and
Carter Broton. The Gophers were able to cut their deficit down to one once more, but
DJ Horne would score at the 13:46 mark to set the final at 4-2. The Sabres were outshot 44-33 in the game but Tyler McArthur was up to the task turning away 42 shots.
Marian hosts its own showcase Oct. 7-9 with the Sabres hosting Dakota Bottineau, Davenport and Adrian.
