Sabre field hockey drops opener at Transylvania

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Marian University field hockey (4-3, 1-2 SAA) outshot Transylvania but fell to the Pioneers by a 3-1 final.

The opening period looked like it would go scoreless before Transylvania scored with just 1:11 left to play in the quarter.  Marian was able to answer back at the 23:31 mark when freshman Allyson Nichols scored her eighth goal of the season.  The Pioneers were once again able to score a late goal, however, finding the back of the cage with just 1:32 until half.

The second half was dominated by the Sabres with Marian outshooting the Pioneers 15-1 in the final 30 minutes.  The Pioneers were able to make that one shot count scoring at the 50:54 mark.  Of the 15 second half shots for the Sabres, 13 were on goal but none were able to find the back of the cage.

Along with a 19-6 advantage in shots, Marian was able to force 21 penalty corners in the defeat.  Freshman Jikke Biemans had 11 shots to lead Marian with 10 of her shots being on goal.  Junior Brenna Abrahamson made three saves in goal.

Marian concludes its trip to Transylvania tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 9, for an 11 a.m. (CDT) non-conference game.
