ADRIAN, Mich. - Marian University NCAA men's hockey (2-2-0, 1-1-0-0 NCHA) allowed a pair of power-play goals and an empty-net goal as No. 1 Adrian defeated the Sabres 4-2 in the series finale.
The Sabres were able to open the scoring for the game when sophomore
Nick Cherkowski netted his third goal of the season at the 8:11 mark. A power-play goal from Adrian a couple minutes later sent the two squads into the first intermission tied 1-1. The Sabres were able to outshoot the Bulldogs 11-8 in the period.
The second period was filled with penalty as the two squads combined for nine penalties. As a result, neither offense could build any momentum in a defensive stanza. The Bulldogs were able to take their first lead of the weekend with another power-play goal, this time a 5-on-3 advantage score.
The Adrian lead only lasted 4:47 into the third period when freshman
Adam Nobes scored his second goal of the season without an assist. Adrian was able to respond, however, scoring at the 9:22 mark and adding an empty-net goal in the final minute to put the final at 4-2. The Sabres had a strong power-play opportunity in the final minutes before the empty-net goal but couldn't find the equalizer. Marian was once again held a lead in shots by a 14-10 margin in the final period.
Marian finished with a 30-25 edge in shots led by sophomore
Alex Rondeau and
Jordan Simoneau who had five shots each. Senior
Colby Muise (2-1-0) suffered his first loss of the season making 21 saves.
Marian hosts Concordia Wisconsin for an 8 p.m. puck drop Friday, Nov. 18 to open an NCHA home-and-home series.
