Marian men's basketball knocks off No. 19 UW-Oshkosh

OSHKOSH, Wis. - Marian University men's basketball (6-5, 4-1 NACC) earned its first victory over UW-Oshkosh since 1988 with a 79-74 win to close out the BSN Winter Classic.

  • The Sabres scored the first five points of the game, but from that point on, neither team was able to manage a lead larger than three points in the first half.
  • UW-Oshkosh managed to score the final three points of the game to take a 33-30 lead into the half.
  • The second half proved to be no different as the two squads went back-and-forth with neither team able to pull away.
  • The Titans were ahead 62-58 with 6:57 left to play before Marian made its move.
  • Marian was able to go on a 9-3 run to take the lead for good with 4:22 left to play at 67-65.
  • The game remained a one-possession game until a jumper from senior David Britton put Marian ahead 77-72 with just 13 seconds remaining.
  • The Titans were able to cut their deficit down to three in the next posseession but a pair of free throws from senior Carson Talbert set the final at 79-74.

  • Marian couldn't miss in the second half shooting 19-of-28 (.679) from the field and 5-of-10 (.500) from three-point range.  The Sabres finished the game 31-of-55 (.564) from the field and 9-of-22 (.409) on three-pointers.
  • The Sabre bench scored 23 points in the victory.
  • The victory snaps an 18 game losing streak to UW-Oshkosh in the all-time series.

Senior Tyler Gouin shot 8-of-9 (.888) from the field in the second half to finish with a game-high 25 points. He also had four assists.
Senior David Britton hit four three-pointers and added 18 points with two assists and four boards. Britton also earned All-Tournament recognition.
Sophomore William White had another impressive night scoring 13 points with a team-high five rebounds off the bench.
