ESTERO, Fla. - No. 12 Marian University ACHA D2 (8-10-1, 1-3-0 NCHL) became the first team ever to sweep No. 1 (SE) Florida Gulf Coast on their home ice with victories of 5-4 and 4-0.

Game 1

  • The Sabres used a big second period to pull away from FGCU after the two teams traded goals in the first period.  Tyler Bueckert was the goal scorer for Marian and it opened the scoring for the game.
  • Florida Gulf Coast took its first lead to open the second period before Marian scored three times in the final 4:06 of the period.  Devon Butler tied the game at 2-2 before Easton Nick netted a power-play goal to put Marian ahead 3-2.  Colby Sherlock then gave Marian a 4-2 advantage going into the third after scoring with just 45 seconds left.
  • Tyler Studant netted a short-handed goal which eventually proved to be the game-winner to open the third period.
  • FGCU would score twice to cut the Marian lead to one but the Sabres were able to hold on.

 

Game 2

  • Neither team lit the lamp in the opening period, and Devon Butler scored the only goal of the second period as the game looked like it would be a defensive battle.
  • Marian then took over in the third period with Dawson Schwengler scoring twice with a second Butler goal sandwiched between.

Game 1

  • Marian outshot FGCU 45-38 for the game and held the Eagles to single-digit shots in the first and second periods.
  • The Sabres had just two power-play chances and scored on one of them.
  • The Marian penalty kill held FGCU to just one goal on six chances.

 

Game 2

  • Shots were at a premium in game two with the Eagles holding a 27-22 advantage.  Marian was outshot 14-4 in the first period but outshot the Eagles in the final two periods.
  • Neither team scored a power-play goal with Marian having four opportunities and FGCU six.
  • The shutout was the first of the season for the Sabres.
