Box Score 2 VERONA, Wis. - Marian University baseball (10-15, 5-9 NACC) fell to Edgewood 15-12 before defeating the Eagles 7-5 in a NACC twin bill.
Both offenses came out swinging with the two squads combining for 27 runs and 32 hits in the opening game. The two squads went back-and-forth the first five innings leading to a 7-7 tie. Graduate student Sean Meyer and sophomore Andrew Schroeder each hit home runs to highlight the Marian scoring. The Eagles would take a two-run lead in the sixth before freshman James Bornick joined the long ball fest with a solo shot to open the seventh.
Edgewood was able to pull away in the bottom half of the seventh scoring six runs. Senior Nick Sterman hit a three-run home run in the top of the ninth to make things interesting but the rally for the Sabres fell short.
Senior Jonah Landowski finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Bornick went 2-for-4 with five runs driven in and a run scored.
Consistent offense in game two saw Marian score at least one run in five of the nine innings to salvage a split. Junior Brady Zackrison and sophomore Robbie Knorr each hit home runs as Marian held a 3-2 lead after three innings. After the Sabres built their lead to 5-2 in the top half of the sixth, the Eagles cut the deficit back down to 5-1. Zackrison and Meyer then hit sacrifice flies in the seventh and eighth inning, respectively, to build enough breathing room for the win.
Landowski, Zackrison, and freshman Dylan Pease all had three-hit games in the win with Zackrison driving in two runs and scoring twice. Graduate student Taylor Middaugh (4-3) tossed his second complete game of the season striking out five and allowing just three earned runs.
Marian returns home for a noon NACC doubleheader against Lakeland tomorrow, Sunday, April 24.
