Box Score 2 FOND DU LAC - Marian University baseball (11-19, 6-11 NACC) fell 7-6 against Wisconsin Lutheran before salvaging a split with a 9-2 win.
Marian jumped out to a 6-0 lead to open the day but couldn't hold on to that lead as WLC rallied for a win. The Sabres took advantage of an error to open the scoring before back-to-back doubles from senior Josh Gates and freshman james Bornick put Marian ahead 3-0 after one. The Sabres managed a run in the third before sophomore Robbie Knorr plated a pair in the fourth to put the Sabres ahead 6-0 after four innings.
The Warrior rally began in the fifth with three unearned runs and WLC cut the deficit down to one with two more in the sixth. WLC was down to its final strike in the ninth but three straight hits with two outs gave WLC a 7-6 lead. Marian got the tying run on base but a double play ended the game.
Marian in seven doubles in the defeat with senior Jonah Landowski going 3-for-4 with a walk, two doubles, and two runs scored. Sophomore Logan Lange went 7.0 innings in teh start and allowed just two earned runs.
Game two had a similar script but the Sabres were able to hold on for a split. After a scoreless first, Marian plated five runs in its half of the second inning. Landowski had a run-producing double to highlight the inning. Then in the third, the Sabres added to its lead wih a pair of runs. Senior Jeremy Laffoon drove in a run in the sixth to build an 8-0 lead only to have WLC score two unearned runs in the seventh. Graduate student Sean Meyer drove in a run in the next half inning with a single to set the final at 9-2. The hit was the 218th for Meyer in his career tying him for the all-time lead.
The Marian offense was aided by six walks and five hit by pitches in game two. Landowski had the lone multi-hit game going 2-for-3 with two driven in, a run scored, a walk, and two more doubles. Graduate student Taylor Middaugh (5-3) had another solid start allowing two unearned runs over 8.0 innings with eight strikeouts.
Marian is scheduled to travel to St. Norbert for a noon doubleheader in NACC action Sunday, May 1.
