Meyer sets all-time hits record for Marian baseball in sweep of SNC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DE PERE, Wis. - Marian University baseball (13-19, 8-11 NACC) earned a road sweep of St. Norbert behind victories of 15-3 in seven innings and 16-7.

Marian scored multiple runs in four of the final five innings of game one to easily defeat SNC.  The Green Knights scored a run in the first inning before the Sabres took the lead in the third inning.  Senior Jonah Landowski and sophomore Robbie Knorr plated runs to put Marian ahead 3-1.  Graduate student Sean Meyer followed Knorr with a double giving him his 219th hit as a Sabre to put him atop the all-time hits list at Marian passing Mike Schaible who had held the record since 1994.

The Sabres added a pair of runs in the fourth off of a single from sophomore Logan Rademan that scored two runs.  After a run-producing single from freshman James Bornick in the fifth, the Sabres were able to break the game open with six runs in the sixth.  Five different Sabres drove in a run in the inning with Rademan providing the only extra-base hit.  This put the Sabres ahead 11-1 but Marian tacked on runs with some power in the seventh.  Senior Josh Gates brought in a run with a double before Bornick hit a three-run homer.  SNC was able to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh but Marian still earned a mercy-rule win.

Landowski (4-2) allowed just one run over 6.0 innings with nine punchouts to earn the victory on the bump.  Six different Sabres had multiple hits led by Bornick who was 4-for-5 with five runs driven in and one run scored.

The offensive explosion continued for Marian in game two with the Sabres recording 21 hits in a 16-7 victory.  St. Norbert scored first once again but Marian took the lead with three runs in the third and four in the fourth.  Knorr hit a two-run homer in the third and Gates went deep hitting a grand slam in the fourth.  The Green Knights plated a run in the fourth before Knorr hit his second homer of the game to put the Sabres ahead 11-2.

The two squads traded runs to a 12-6 Marian lead after six innings where the Sabres scored four runs between the seventh and eighth innings.  A homer from Meyer and a run-producing triple from Gates led the way.  SNC scored once in the eighth to put the final at 16-7.

Senior Mac Doherty (1-1) earned the victory highlighting a bullpen that tossed the final five innings allowing just five hits and two runs.  Gates and Bornick each had five-hit games with Gates hitting just the second cycle in program history to go with scoring three times and driving in five.  Knorr also finished with five driven in on the victory.

Marian concludes game two of its doubleheader against CUW Tuesday, May 3 at 4:30 p.m.  The Sabres hold a 3-2 advantage heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.
