Box Score 2 RIVER FOREST, Ill. - Marian University baseball (15-22, 10-14 NACC) was swept by Concordia Chicago 11-10 in 12 innings and 9-5 to close out the NACC season.
The Sabres were able to jump out to an early 8-1 lead in game one behind a five-run second inning. Seniors Jonah Landowski and Josh Gates each hit home runs in the inning with Gates blasting a three-run shot. Graduate student Sean Meyer drove in a pair of runs in the third with a double to build the early advantage. The Cougars then scored seven unanswered runs to tie the game and force extras. CUC was able to score three runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth to highlight the comeback.
Marian was able to take a two-run lead after scoring a pair of runs in the top of the 11th. This lead wouldn't hold, however, as the Cougars hit a two-run homer to continue the game. CUC then completed the comeback with a run in the 12th.
Gates went 3-for-5 with four runs driven in and two runs to pace the offense, while Meyer also posted a three-hit game.
Marian had another lead late in game two but a big eighth inning secured a sweep for Concordia Chicago. The Sabres found themselves ahead 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth highlighted by a single from freshman James Bornick that plated a pair of runs. The Cougars bounced back taking a 4-3 lead after five innings of action.
The Sabres made sure this lead didn't last long with Marian tying the game in the sixth. Sophomore Albert Kiszka gave Marian the lead again in the seventh at 5-4 with a run-producing single. The Cougars answered in the eighth with a two-run double and three-run homer to set the final at 9-5.
Senior Mac Doherty posted four strikeouts over 2.0 innings of work and only allowed one hit. Bornick led the offense going 3-for-5 with two driven in and one run scored. Landowski also had a three-hit game driving in one run and scoring another.
Marian hosts Ripon in a non-conference doubleheader tomorrow, Tuesday, May 10, to conclude the season.
