FOND DU LAC - Marian University field hockey (3-1, 1-1 SAA) scored three goals in the final quarter to defeat CUW.
The victory was the first SAA win for Marian field hockey in program history.
It was a defensive battle at the beginning of the game with the two squads combining for just one shot on goal in the first 15 minutes. The Marian offense found a groove in the second quarter and finally broke the scoreless tie with just 50.4 seconds remaining. Freshman
Jikke Biemans was able to track down a loose ball in the box and sneak the score in for her third goal of the season.
CUW bounced back in the third quarter outshooting Marian 4-2 and eventually found an equalizer at the 42:34 mark. The Falcons once again outshot Marian in the final quarter, but Marian made the most of its shots scoring three goals.
Freshman
Allyson Nichols scored the eventual game-winner just 1:15 into the quarter. She then padded the Marian lead with a penalty-stroke goal with just 9:55 left to play. Nichols would cap off her second hat trick of the season scoring off of a Falcon turnover with 5:06 left to play.
Nichols and Biemans each had six shots as Marian finished with 16 as a team. Junior
Brenna Abrahamson (3-1) made seven saves in the victory with six of her stops coming in the final quarter.
Marian next heads to DePauw Friday, Sept. 30 for a 4 p.m. (CDT) non-conference game.
