Marian field hockey shuts out Earlham in inaugural home game

FOND DU LAC - Marian University field hockey (2-0, 0-0 SAA) defeated Earlham 2-0 in the first home field hockey game in Marian history.

The Sabres wasted no time scoring the first goal in Smith Field history when freshman Jikke Biemans found the back of the cage just 52 seconds into the game.  Freshman Allyson Nichols earned an assist on the play with her centering pass to the middle.  This proved to be the lone goal in an opening quarter that saw Marian outshoot the Quakers 6-0.

Biemans was back at it scoring with 6:50 left in the second quarter to put the Sabres ahead 2-0, assist to freshman Houtackers.  The Sabres took this lead into the half and outshot Earlham 9-4 through the first 30 minutes.

Neither team was able to tally another score as a result of strong defensive play in the second half.  Marian finished the game with a 17-8 advantage in shots and held an 11-3 edge in penalty corners.

Biemans had 11 of the Marian shots, six on frame, while freshman Indi Rameckers had three shots on goal as well.  Junior Brenna Abrahamson (2-0) stood tall in goal and stopped all six shots she faced for the first shutout in Marian field hockey history.

Marian hosts Centre Sunday, Sept. 18 at 11 a.m. in the first SAA game in program history.
