Marian NCAA men's hockey reclaims Battle of Highway 41

FOND DU LAC - Marian University NCAA men's hockey (6-10-1, 1-6-3-0 NCHA) reclaimed the Battle of Highway 41 trophy after defeating Lawrence 2-1 in a shootout following a 4-4 tie.

  • Lawrence came out with a hot start on their home ice but it was sophomore Anthony Bilka who opened the scoring 8:14 into the game with his first goal of the season.  Freshman Seth McCulloch earned an assist.
  • The Vikings answered shortly after to put the game at a 1-1 tie after one.  Lawrence finished with a 13-5 edge in shots.
  • Marian was able to regain the lead 6:37 into the second period when sophomore Jordan Simoneau netted his eighth goal of the season with an assist from junior Alex Rondeau.
  • After the Vikings tied it once again, freshman Noah Pickart scored his first collegiate goal with just 1:43 left in the second period.  Sophomores Daunte Fortner and Jaymes Knee each assisted the goal which put Marian ahead 3-2 going into the third.
  • Marian built a two-goal lead scoring just 2:30 into the final period with Fortner netting his third tally of the year.  Senior Jack Sampson and Knee assisted the goal.
  • The Vikings rallied scoring a power-play goal at the 9:42 mark and tying the game with just eight seconds left and an extra attacker on the ice.
  • Overtime was all Marian as the Sabres outshot the Vikings 8-3 but neither team found the back of the net leading to a shootout.
  • Lawrence had a 1-0 lead after the first round of the shootout but Knee and Simoneau each scored in the final two rounds with senior Colby Muise stopping the final two Lawrence shots to give Marian the extra point.

  • Marian finished with a 42-37 edge in shots with the Sabres outshooting the Vikings 21-7 in the second period.
  • The Sabres were scoreless on two power-play chances and Lawrence had one power-play goal on six opportunities.
  • Lawrence won 51 of the 80 faceoffs in the game.
  • The rivalry between Marian and Lawrence has now gone into overtime the last three games.

Sophomore Jaymes Knee had a pair of assists and scored a goal in the shootout.  The multi-point effort is his fifth of the season. Sophomore Daunte Fortner had his second multi-point game of the season scoring a goal with an assist. Senior Colby Muise (6-8-1) made 33 saves with 12 stops in the first and third period.  He also stopped a pair of shots in the shootout.
