Sabre women's hockey opens home series with Aurora

FOND DU LAC - Marian University women's ice hockey (6-13-1, 2-8-0-1 NCHA) trailed by just one goal midway through the third but fell to Aurora 5-2.

  • Neither team was able to light the lamp in the opening stanza with the Marian offense producing several high-quality scoring chances.
  • Aurora was given a 5-on-3 power-play opportunity in the opening minutes of the second period and took advantage scoring at the 1:40 mark.
  • The Spartans added to the lead at the 8:58 mark before Marian answered back.
  • Just 30 seconds after the Aurora goal, freshman Logan Crawford scored her second goal of the season after sophomore Hailie Hefel created a turnover.
  • The Spartans responded just 1:58 later to go into the second intermission ahead 3-1.
  • The Sabres were able to once again cut the deficit to one when junior Hannah Cunha scored her third goal of the season, assist to fellow junior Aeryn Olson.
  • Aurora would put the game away scoring two goals in the final 7:59 with the second being an empty-net score.

  • The Marian penalty kill had a busy night allowing one goal on six chances.  The Sabre power play was scoreless on two chances.

Junior Hannah Cunha cut the Marian deficit to one goal in the third period with her third goal of the season. Junior Kayla Kolpitcke (5-7-1) stopped 32 shots with double-digit saves in the first two periods. Freshman Logan Crawford opened the Marian scoring her second goal of the season.
