Marian women's basketball holds off Foresters for first win

FOND DU LAC - Marian University women's basketball (1-3, 0-0 NACC) earned its first win of the season defeating Lake Forest 76-70.

  • Marian had a fast start scoring the first eight points of the game and leading 11-2 with 6:12 left in the first quarter.
  • The Foresters responded going on a 20-5 run to lead 22-16, but a jumper at the buzzer from senior Lexi Brakebush put the score at 22-18 at the end of the first quarter.
  • The two squads went back-and-forth with the Foresters eventually leading 37-31 with 2:27 on the clock.
  • Marian was able to build momentum headed into halftime scoring the final four points of the half to only trail 37-35.
  • The opening minutes of the second half saw the two teams battle to a 40-40 stalemate.
  • The Sabres then pulled away with an 18-3 spurt to end the third quarter and lead 58-43 going into the final 10 minutes.
  • LFC was strong defensively to open the fourth quarter and were able to chip away at their deficit and only trailed by three with a 14-2 run to open the final quarter.
  • Marian was able to hold off the momentum and got hot from beyond the arc hitting four triples to lead 74-66 with 1:19 remaining.
  • From there, both offenses went cold with Marian managing to hold on for a 76-70 win.

  • Marian shot 28-of-72 (.389) in the game and 8-of-30 (.267) from beyond the arc.
  • Lake Forest finished 27-of-71 (.380) from the field and 9-of-31 (.290) on three-point attempts.
  • Marian had at least 17 points in all four quarters and outscored the Foresters 23-6 in the third stanza.
  • The Sabres were able to take advantage of eight offensive boards outscoring LFC 12-3 in second-chance points.
  • Marian improves to 2-1 all-time against LFC with this being the first meeting between the two programs in Sadoff Gym.

Junior Chelsea King scored 23 points to lead Marian and had five steals.
Freshman Nyedeng Awak grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds to go with six points.
Senior Lyla Bartol chipped in 13 points to go with three rebounds and just as many assists.
